NATIONALS Senator Fiona Nash is urging Northern Rivers residents to do their Christmas shopping close to home to support their local businesses and communities.
The call follows a similar message from NSW Business Chamber's Northern Rivers branch regional manager John Murray.
Senator Nash said uncertain financial times made it even more important to shop local.
"I can't encourage strongly enough people in rural and regional communities to shop locally this Christmas.
"It is vitally important that we give businesses in our regional communities as much support as we can," she said.
Senator Nash said 35% of Australia's 2.7 million small businesses were in regional areas.
Small businesses in Australia provided close to 4 million jobs, she said.
