Dear Editor,
It’s a sad day when you have Labor, Greens and Independent politicians celebrating the imposition of a tax on the Australian people.
A carbon tax under which, according to Treasury modelling, Australia’s emissions will increase from 578 million tonnes in 2012-13 to 621 million tonnes in 2020.
The government says families will be $9.90 a week worse off and will give $10.10 back in compensation. That’s a 20 cents a week buffer.
It’s not overly reassuring when the cost of living continues to rise, and electricity suppliers just this week warn of higher power bills due to the carbon price.
The government says tax cuts are part of the compensation plan. What it doesn’t say is that it’s also increasing the tax rate applying to lower income levels from 15 to 19 cents, and from 30 to 33 cents, which will clawback much of the assistance families can expect.
Nor can the government guarantee adequate compensation for high living costs when an emissions trading scheme takes place in 2015. The carbon price will then fluctuate continually according to the market. The government’s best response was that compensation will be assessed each year!
And if taxing the Australian people isn’t enough, they will now foot the bill of an advertising campaign.
The Coalition will fight this toxic tax right to the very end, and have pledged to rescind it in government.
Yours sincerely,
Senator Fiona Nash
The Nationals Senator for NSW
Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate
