Hours left for Saffin to keep faith with her electorate

The Labor MP for Page, Janelle Saffin, has just hours left to keep faith with her electorate and vote against Julia Gillard’s carbon tax in Parliament tomorrow.

“Ms Saffin was voted in with the Labor government on Julia Gillard’s promise that there would be no carbon tax,” Nationals Senator for NSW, Fiona Nash said.

“Ms Saffin can restore faith with the people of Page by supporting the Coalition’s amendment which prevents the carbon tax coming into place before an election.

“The amendment, if passed, would make the next election a referendum on whether or not the Australian people want a carbon tax. The Labor-Greens government has consistently denied the Australian people this democratic right.

“The most recent example is the Labor-Greens dominated parliamentary inquiry which allowed only six days for public submissions on 1100 pages of carbon tax legislation.

“Janelle Saffin should have called for an extension to this ridiculous deadline, on behalf of her constituents.

“She has one last opportunity to save face and not betray the people of Page – she should vote against this toxic carbon tax which will drive up the cost of living, threaten jobs and do nothing for the environment.

“I urge residents in Page to use these final hours to lobby their MP to oppose the carbon tax when it comes to a vote tomorrow by calling her office on 02 6277 4323, fax 02 6277 8501 or email Janelle.Saffin.MP@aph.gov.au.”
