The federal Coalition’s Regional Education spokesperson, Senator Fiona Nash, says Cooma vet student, Bronte Doughton, is an inspiration to other rural students as to what they can achieve.
The 19-year-old student is one of four students from Australia and one of the 20 students worldwide to be selected to attend the International Livestock Congress in Canada in August.
“Bronte will get to meet with and talk to agricultural industry experts from across the world. The experience and knowledge she’ll gain will be invaluable to her career as a vet, the veterinary profession and the community in which she chooses to work in,” Senator Nash said.
Bronte is in her second year of her veterinary science degree at Charles Sturt University, and has spent much of her practical placement to date in her hometown of Cooma.
“CSU has an impressive record in educating rural students, many who return to rural and regional communities to work,” Senator Nash said
“Over 90 per cent of CSU’s first cohort of vet science graduates in 2010 chose to practise in rural and regional areas. The university also attracts high numbers of country students to its health courses, in which most of them also return to rural and regional Australia to work*.
“These results are crucial in helping to address the shortage of professionals in the bush. It is also the focus of the Coalition’s regional education policy.
“Rural Australia needs the likes of Bronte who have an enormous contribution to make.”
