Nationals Senator, Fiona Nash, warns farmers and regional communities will be hard hit by a carbon tax no matter what.
Senator Nash spoke at the anti-carbon tax rally at parliament house today that was attended by over 3000 people.
She demanded Julia Gillard and the Labor Government guarantee carbon tax won’t apply to agriculture. The National Farmers Federation this week did the same.
“Farmers are understandably very concerned that agriculture will be slapped with a carbon tax or become part of an ETS. Julia Gillard’s lie about never introducing a carbon tax has spooked them even more,” Senator Nash said
“Mind you, they’re still going to feel the pain even if agriculture is excluded with higher fuel, electricity, transport, fertiliser, processing and production costs being passed onto them.
“The pain doesn’t stop at the farmgate, the farming communities that rely on them will also feel the effects. That’s on top of rising household power, and fuel costs.”
Speaking in the senate, Senator Nash said Julia Gillard and the Labor government was living “a fairyland of unreality” when it comes to the impact a carbon tax will have on people.
“They are the ones in denial. They are deny there are alternative views and persecute those who do, like those working families who were at the rally. Labor Senator Penny Wong arrogantly dismissed them as “that other audience”, while her colleague, Senator David Feeney, referred to them as being associated with the Ku Klux Klan which is appalling.
“They should get out of their bubble and get into the real world, where they’d soon realise these people are genuinely concerned - they are saying no to a carbon tax and the government should listen.”
