Applications for the Rural Tertiary Hardship Fund have finally been called, the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Education, Senator Fiona Nash, said. One-off $3000 grants under the fund were supposed to be paid to disadvantaged rural and regional students going onto tertiary studies from the 1st of January this year. Application forms and details on how the funds would be administered were absent from the department’s website yesterday, but magically appeared within hours after the Coalition asked the Education Minister, Peter Garrett, for an explanation during Question Time. It follows the delayed release of the eligibility criteria last December – two weeks past the deadline. “This Labor government, true to its form, can’t meet its own deadlines. Just how long will it take to actually pay students these grants?” Senator Nash said. “At this rate, it could be Christmas.”
