The Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Education, Senator Fiona Nash, will visit northern New South Wales as part of a regional education tour next week. She’ll visit Armidale and Tamworth on Monday and Port Macquarie on Wednesday. In Armidale, she’ll meet with school principals and the University of New England before heading to Tamworth to visit a special education school and meet with the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association. In Port Macquarie, she’ll attend a forum on Independent Youth Allowance then meet with a range of education stakeholders and parents. Senator Nash has been driving the national campaign to have the Independent Youth Allowance eligibility criteria made fairer for students living in `inner regional’ areas. Many students in Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Armidale and surrounding towns are missing out because of changes the Labor government made. “I urge anyone who’s affected or concerned about these changes to attend the forum in Port Macquarie next Wednesday morning from 8:30 to 10:30. I intend to take those concerns back to Canberra to Labor, the Greens and Independent senator Nick Xenophon, who are stopping my efforts to fix the problem,” she said. “As a mother of two teenage boys and someone who lives in a rural community, I know how important access to a quality education is, no matter where you live. “This is a chance to get out to the regional areas and hear firsthand what the issues and concerns are. “The feedback I get from this tour and others will assist the Coalition in developing a regional education policy that makes a difference.”
