The National Union of Students and grassroots Greens membership have joined the thousands of students concerned about the Independent Youth Allowance, the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Education, Senator Fiona Nash, said. The National Union of Students has raised concerns about access to the allowance after research found university students were highly stressed. The research from the University of Queensland found 83.9 per cent of students were mentally stressed and that much of it is caused from financial pressure. The researcher, Dr Helen Stallman, is quoted by the Emaxhealth website: “Studying full time and having to work to support yourself puts unrealistic pressures on students and more needs to be done to ensure their mental health and that they stay in our universities.” The union president, Carla Drakeford, said to The Age: “NUS is concerned about the number of students who are mentally stressed, which is why we have always advocated for more students to receive youth allowance.” “Then there’s a high profile Greens member in the NSW Riverina who reportedly criticised the Greens senators for blocking my Private Senator’s Bill that would have made the Independent Youth Allowance easier to access,” Senator Nash said. “Had the Greens, Labor and Independent Nick Xenophon allowed it to be debated and supported it, thousands of students living in `inner regional’ areas would now have certainty and be able to plan their university studies. “Instead they’ve put their political agenda ahead the interests and welfare of regional students, and should be ashamed of themselves.
