Students urged to air Youth Allowance concerns at inquiry

Regional-based students struggling to access the Independent Youth Allowance will continue to live in limbo while an inquiry takes place, the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Education, Senator Fiona Nash, said.

“Labor, the Greens and Independent Senator Nick Xenophon opted to hold an inquiry rather than fixing the problem now by supporting my Private Senator’s Bill,” Senator Nash said.

“Had they agreed to debate and support the Bill this week, students living in inner regional areas would have certainty and be able to plan their tertiary education.”

The Bill sought to immediately reinstate the original and fairer eligibility criteria, making it fairer for all regional students.

“But instead we’ll have to wait months for an inquiry to take place, let alone the Labor government taking any action…if it does. We know its poor record in getting things done.

“I urge students, parents and others to express their concerns in a submission to the inquiry. I’ve also launched an online petition that demands a fair deal.”

The deadline for submissions is the 6th of December. As part of the senate inquiry, a public hearing will be held on the 17th of December in Canberra. The report is expected in February.

“I’ve no doubt that regional communities are angry and disappointed that the Greens and Senator Xenophon chose to desert regional students,” Senator Nash said.

“They can be assured the Liberal-National Coalition will continue to fight on their behalf.”
