What promise will the PM break next?

The NSW Nationals Senator, Fiona Nash, says she wonders what next is on the Prime Minister’s hit list of broken promises.

Within days, Julia Gillard has backtracked on her election promise not to introduce a carbon tax and to process asylum seekers off-shore.

At the weekend, she wouldn’t commit to further investment in regional infrastructure.

She says the “new environment” created by a hung parliament is grounds for her back flips.

Who knows what next she’ll say or do when things don’t go according to plan.

It took comments by an influential mining executive to put a carbon tax back on the table, despite the inevitable impact on productivity and living costs.

One can only imagine what the Gillard government will do under the influence of the Greens.

  • Will it agree to the Greens’ demands for a higher mining tax?
  • Allow asylum seekers released into the community in as little as 14 days after they arrive, potentially with no medical or security check?
  • Cut funding for non-government schools?
  • Shut down more marine areas and ban fishing?
  • Abolish the Private Health Insurance rebate, placing pressure on public hospitals?
  • Introduce death duties and increase the company tax?
  • Close more forests to logging and take more water away from farmers?

None of Labor’s election promises or policies can be taken seriously when they’re so easily trashed or drastically changed.
