The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has let the cat out of the bag about herplans for a carbon tax, NSW Nationals Senator, Fiona Nash, said.
Three days ago she told the public there'd be no carbon tax under the government she'd lead.
Today she's said she's open to a carbon tax or Emissions Trading Scheme.
Prime Minister Gillard is reported by AAP as saying: "Australians frustrated that Labor had not achieved an emissions trading scheme inits first term should give the government another chance."
In today's Australian, she says: "I don't rule out the possibility of legislating a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, a market-based mechanism."
"Julia Gillard today confirmed what we've known all along - a re-elected Gillard Government backed by the Greens' Bob Brown and Lee Rhiannon, will introduce a carbon tax, driving up living costs for everyone anddestroying jobs," Senator Nash said.
"We cannot let Labor and their secret preference deal with The Greens jeopardise our economy, jobs and cost of living."
Senator Nash said if the Greens had the balance of power, they'd force Gillardto introduce a 40 per pent carbon tax. That would trigger a 64 per centspike in electricity prices, impacting small businesses, pensioners, farmers and families.
"Australia emits 1.6 per cent of the world's emissions. While the rest of theworld is not doing anything, imposing a tax burden on Australians isnot going to do anything for the climate," she said.
"A tax is not going to change the temperature, it will just hurt regionalcommunities. The only way to stop Julia Gillard's great big new tax oneverything is to vote for The Nationals."
The Nationals in Coalition have a real plan to get this country back ontrack and ensure regional Australians receive their fair share. We willdeliver real improvements to roads, hospitals, schools, employment, payback the debt and end the waste.
