Labor Senator and Candidate Under Fire for selling out People of Calare

The Nationals Senator for NSW and Deputy Leader of The Nationals in the Senate, Senator Fiona Nash, today called on the ALP Senator for NSW, Senator Steve Hutchins and the ALP candidate in Calare to answer some very simple questions.

“After this weeks decision for Labor to strike a preference deal with the Greens, Senator Hutchins must explain exactly what deal was cut in return for the preference,” Senator Nash said.

“Given that the Greens want to tax miners even more and introduce a carbon tax, close down the $55 billion coal industry and shut all of our coal-fired power stations, effectively destroying the economic base of Calare communities like Lithgow, and destroy logging and forestry towns like Oberon, local ALP identities must explain why they have jumped into bed with a political party that wants to destroy jobs and the economic base of Calare.

Specifically Senator Hutchins and the ALP candidate must answer the following questions:

  •  Will the ALP rule out increasing taxes after the election on Calare’s primary industries, such as the Lithgow coal mines, Orange’s Cadia or North Parkes mines and our farmers?
  • Does the Senator and ALP Candidate support the Greens push to stop all coal mining and to close down all coal powered generators, effectively destroying Lithgow’s economic base and making the price of electricity so expensive small businesses would be forced to close, jobs would be lost?
  • If not, why has the ALP chosen to directly preference the Greens in the Senate all but guaranteeing that Bob Brown will hold the balance of power in the Senate?
  • Do you support the call by the Greens Leader, Bob Brown, for a new tax of $23 dollars a tonne for carbon emissions?
  • Do you support the Greens push for an end to all old growth logging in Australia and his call for a ban on Australian’s recreational fishing in their expanded National marine parks?
  • Why has the Labor Party allowed the importation of apples from China without taking into consideration the Suzuki Fruit Fly which is devastating crops in Europe and the United States, with farmers in the US reporting crop losses of up to 100 percent?
  • Can you explain to the people of Orange and the Central West why they missed out on vital cancer funding because of the Labor Government’s blatant rorting of the Regional Cancer Funding? (Gosford receive a regional cancer centre of excellence, despite the fact that it was classified as a major city hospital, and therefore ineligible for funding under the programs guidelines).
  • Exactly what are the ALP plans for water security in Calare for our cities, towns, villages, farmers and businesses?
  • Where is the promised $10 million for Orange’s Northern Distributor?

Senator Nash concluded the only way to stop the wasteful spending, increased taxes and the Greens holding the balance of power was to vote for the Nationals.
