Senator Fiona Nash, Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate and Senator Richard Colbeck, The Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Forestry, have instigated an inquiry into the nation's biosecurity and quanrantine arrangements.
“Coalition Senators believe the issues surrounding quarantine and biosecurity processes have caused many serious concerns over a long period of time. The committtee will comprehensively look at these processes, Senator Nash said.
“This is an issue the Liberal/National Coalition takes very sereiously. This inquiry is about making sure our nation's biosecurity and quarantine arrangements are up to scratch.
Senator Nash said the Rural, Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee will inquire into:
- Adequacy of current biosecurity and quarantine arrangements including resourcing
- Consider future projected demand and resourcing requirements
- Progress toward achievement of reform of AQIS export fees and charges
- Progress in implementation of Beale Review recommendations and their place in meeting projected biosecurity demand and resourcing
- Any other matters
“It's vitally important we have the appropriate proccesses in place to ensure confidence that we have our biosecuity and quarantine arrangements.
Senator Nash said this inquiry would be a lengthy and comprehensive process, but one that was in the nation's best interest.
“The inquiry will have significant input from industry and all relevant stakeholders and this will be about getting the collective views of industry bodies and ensuring we get the processes right.
