The Nationals Liberal Coalition will take practical first steps to fix Labor's public hospital mess across the State and install community hospital boards at each public hospital in New South Wales.
Nationals NSW Senator Fiona Nash said, installing community hospital boards will shift public hospital focus to meet patient needs rather than bureaucratic bottom lines driven out of Sydney.
"The public hospital system across New South Wales is in a big mess and it needs fixing. Hospital staffs are being asked to do more with less, and many hospitals are reaching breaking point," said Senator Nash.
"Putting communities back in control of community hospitals means the hard-working doctors, nurses and other health professionals that live and work locally will work with a local CEO who is accountable to a local board which in turn is responsible to the local community."
"Labor's immediate rejection of the Coalition's plan for community boards to manage hospitals shows that Kevin Rudd and Labor think the people of New South Wales should have no say in how public hospitals in their local communities should be run.
"Kevin Rudd said Labor would fix the hospital system by June 30 last year, or take over control from the states. Mr „all talk and no action" Rudd has done neither!
"Mr Rudd and Labor want the people of New South Wales to continue to trust the management of our public hospitals to the same city-centric government and bureaucrats in Sydney.
"Unlike Mr Rudd, the Nationals Liberal Coalition is ready to act in the best interests of communities across New South Wales." "The Nationals have long supported such an idea, because we live in the communities that are most affected by poor management out of Sydney and know how much expertise is held by local health professionals.
"This is the first and necessary step towards a better public hospital system.
"I have not spoken to anyone across New South Wales who seriously thinks the NSW State Government is doing a good job on health, so why does Kevin Rudd and Labor?" Senator Nash said.
