Summer has kicked into gear in a big way with high temperatures blanketing much of NSW and the southern states. Of course that raises the risk of bushfires and we must all follow the advice of state authorities in relation to fire danger. The NSW Rural Fire Service website is update as required as is the fire danger map
Preparation and awareness are the keys.
With the threat of bushfires it is hard to believe that only two weeks ago much of the northern part of NSW was awash with floodwater. The rains came for Christmas and some farmers celebrated the best falls they had seen in years.
About half of NSW is currently experiencing an “Exceptional Circumstances” event which triggers short-term support for farmers in situations beyond the scope of normal risk management.
Farmers are understandably nervous about the lifting of drought declarations. They are worried about the ad-hoc system of water allocations in the Murray Darling Basin and are wondering what water will be available.
They are unable to plant crops or make good plans without knowing how much water they will have. The NSW Premier has said she will make a decision when it becomes clear how much water finds its way to the Menindee Lakes.
More rain is needed to ensure adequate long-term supplies especially now that the summer temperatures are really hitting their straps.
