The Labor Government has abandoned students in rural and regional Australia with the rejection of Coalition amendments to its youth allowance bill.
Senator Fiona Nash, Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate and Senator for NSW, said it was incredibly disappointing that the Government had rejected the Coalition amendments to the Social Security and Other Legislations Amendment (Income Support for Students) Bill 2009 when it returned to the House of Representatives.
“The Labor Government and independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor voted to disagree with the Coalition amendments.
“This is an appalling move by the Government, completely selling out rural and regional students. They obviously have no understanding whatsoever of the effect of their legislation on thousands of students.
“The Education Minister, Julia Gillard, talks about an education revolution. These are obviously hollow words given the Government’s actions today. If the minister was serious about providing opportunities for students she would have accepted the amendments.
“Rural and regional students and their families have every right to believe that this Labor Government has abandoned them.”
