The Rural and Regional Affairs and References Committee will conduct a public hearing in Canberra today on the Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment (Income Support for Students) Bill 2009.

Committee chair Senator Fiona Nash said witnesses will represent the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Centrelink, Universities Australia, the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations, student representatives from Orange high schools, the National Tertiary Education Union, Rural Education Equity Alliance (Get Reeal) and Bendigo Youth Allowance Action Group.

“This hearing is on the legislation and the committee will report by October 26. There will be further hearings by the Senate Inquiry into Rural and Regional access to Secondary and Tertiary Education Opportunities and that report is due in December.”
