The inquiry by the Senate’s Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Committee into Rural and Regional Access to Secondary and Tertiary Education Opportunities is in the process of holding hearings across Australia. Nationals Senator for NSW, Fiona Nash, chairs the committee and the hearings continue in Perth today, move to Adelaide tomorrow and Albury on Thursday. Another hearing will be held in Canberra later. “There have already been more than 300 submissions and some of the people and universities which made submissions have been invited to the hearings to put their case and to be available to answer questions from the Senators who are on the committee,” Senator Nash said. “Any proposals that change the ability of regional students to gain an education need careful examination. This public forum allows families, educational institutions and others to tell us how they are going to be directly affected. “The Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment (Income Support for Students) Bill 2009 was introduced in the House of Representatives and has been referred to the RRAT committee. Submissions on the bill close on October 6 and there will be hearings in October. The committee is due to report by October 26.”
