North Coast Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has used a speech in the Senate today to slam the Rudd Labor Government’s failure to fix local hospitals by mid 2009. Senator Nash reminded Parliament that Richmond Labor MP Justine Elliot had run front page advertisements prior to the November 2007 Federal Election promising “Kevin Rudd will fix our hospitals”. “The specific pledge was that Federal Labor would take over all of Australia’s 750 public hospitals if they didn’t improve by mid 2009,” Senator Nash said. “Since then Federal Labor Health Minister Nicola Roxon has been running away from that pledge, claiming there have been ‘significant developments’ and ‘positive signs of improvements’ in public hospitals,” Senator Nash said. (source: http://www.smh.com.au/national/government-cool-on-hospital-takeover-20090524-bjj5.html) “What regional hospitals has Ms Roxon visited to come to that incredible conclusion? Not many I suspect. North Coast Labor MPs Justine Elliot and Janelle Saffin have not raised their takeover promise since the election. Mrs Elliot hasn’t even talked mentioned any North Coast hospitals in Parliament since she made the promise.” “There is no question Labor mismanagement is causing a terrible crisis in our hospitals. Some have borrowed bandages from local vets, others stopped serving meat because they couldn’t pay the local butcher. Labor is fond of saying it is keeping all of its election promises, but that is plainly rubbish. Labor is picking and choosing which promises to keep. “The hospitals promise was the most important one from a North Coast perspective, but it is being totally ignored. “The fact that Janelle Saffin and Justine Elliot stand by and let our hospitals deteriorate shows just how ineffective they are,” Senator Nash said.
