Global recession? Buy Aussie and help regional Australia, Nash urges

The current world economic crisis is a good reason for Australian consumers to change their spending patterns and buy more Australian Made, Australian Grown food and fibre, according to NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash. “We know the economy is getting worse and more job losses are on the way, but a small change in personal spending patterns could make a positive change for regional communities,” Senator Nash said. “Australian food is fresher and therefore healthier for your family than imports.” “When you buy Aussie made jocks and socks you are also doing the right thing by the environment, in the sense that a lesser amount of fossil fuels is required to transport it from its place of origin to your kitchen.” “But even more importantly buying more domestic food and clothes is critical to Australia’s food security and regional employment.” “Increasing the percentage of Australian food you eat and Australian clothes you wear could mean a job for your neighbour or your kids.” Senator Nash quoted a study conducted by Roy Morgan Research for the Australian Made, Australian Grown campaign and released in July 2007. Key findings included: • 89% of consumers believe it to be 'very important' or 'important' that the fresh food they buy is Australian • 82% of consumers believe it is 'very important' or 'important' that the processed food they buy is Australian • 74% of consumers say that one of the reasons for buying Australian Grown is to 'support local farmers, fishermen and businesses' Source: http://www.australianmade.com.au/research
