Save Murrumbateman Post Office

Save Murrumbateman Post Office
NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash is calling on Australia Post management to grant a six-month moratorium on their planned closure of Murrumbateman Post Office, currently scheduled for February 28. “Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the case, the loss of the Post Office would be a major and undeserved blow to the Murrumbateman community,” Senator Nash said. “There are several older residents on 10km restricted driving licences who will no longer be able to access postal services if the nearest office becomes Yass, some 19km away. Ms Nash grilled Australia Post executives on the subject during Senate Estimates hearings at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday. She said a six month moratorium on the closure should allow a common sense solution to emerge and would be a significant goodwill gesture from Australia Post ahead of its crisis talks with the Murrumbateman Progress Association this Wednesday. “The new owners of the General Store where the post office is located have agreed to maintain current arrangements for another six months but have been knocked back by Australia Post.” “There are premises available in the town where the post office could be relocated and there have been several applicants for the licence, although I am advised there has been no resolution to the situation,” Senator Nash said. “Australia Post contractors have been putting pink rocks outside local homes to tell residents where they should install letterboxes, but this will not allow locals to receive and send parcels.”
