Country NSW can’t afford Rudd’s $42,000,000,000 splurge
NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has savaged the Rudd Government’s $42 billion unfunded spending package, saying it would fail its economic objectives, would cripple the country with debt and offered ‘nothing for country seniors or country hospitals’ “To quote Nationals Leader Warren Truss, ‘What we have here is a short window of cash splashing around the economy, followed by a decade or more of economic gloom and debt repayment’,” Senator Nash said. “Kevin Rudd promised to fix our hospitals, but they get nothing, Kevin Rudd promised to help pensioners but they miss out altogether,” Senator Nash said. “The problem with blowing 42 billion taxpayer dollars we don’t have is that it will make it even harder in the future to find funds for urgent country infrastructure – not just hospitals, but also water infrastructure, local nursing homes, and the road and rail network.” Senator Nash acknowledged the Coalition’s opposition to the package would be unpopular with some in the short term, but said it was the only responsible thing to do. “Of course local parents like the idea of a $950 gift, but I ask them to consider how much more their children will have to pay back in the long term if we allow Rudd to wreck the Australian economy,” Senator Nash said. “It took us a decade to pay back Keating’s budget black hole, and the one Rudd is proposing would be even bigger – your kids just cannot afford this irresponsible splurge.”
