Joint Media Release: Joan van Lieshout Tweed Mayor (02) 6670 2401 Thomas George MP Member for Lismore (02) 6621 3624 Senator Fiona Nash NSW Senator (02) 6382 3400 “Council wants governments to get their act together…” – Mayor van Lieshout Member for Lismore Thomas George, Tweed Mayor Joan van Lieshout and NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash met in Murwillumbah on Thursday to demand the State and Federal Labor Governments end the uncertainty over the future of Murwillumbah Hospital. Also present was Save Murwillumbah Hospital Committee Chairman Ian Ross. Thomas George said it was time for NSW Labor Premier to pull his bureaucrats into line and properly fund the hospital and plan for its future. “Local doctors say the Area Health Service is downgrading the hospital by stealth. The maternity ward is clearly under threat with the Government’s refusal to recruit an obstetrician,” Mr George said. “I am deeply concerned about the information bring provided to me by the Save the Hospital Committee about the apparent disappearance into consolidated revenue of hundreds of thousands of dollars raised locally for Murwillumbah Hospital.” Tweed Mayor Joan van Lieshout said local residents and ratepayers deserved the same level of health services as those enjoyed by city residents. “Council wants the State and Federal governments to get their act together when it comes to Tweed and Murwillumbah hospitals – the problems are well documented and need to be addressed immediately,” Councillor van Lieshout insisted. Nationals duty senator for the North Coast Fiona Nash said local MP Jusitne Elliot had been elected on an expensively advertised promise that “Kevin Rudd will fix our hospitals”, and she couldn’t now wash her hands of the issue. “NSW Labor is broke and can’t fix this on its own. Rudd Labor must step in as promised with desperately need funds to help literally long-suffereing Murwillumbah patients,” Senator Nash said. “Before the November 2007 federal election Mrs Elliot stood in front of Murwillumbah Hospital with now Health Minister Nicola Roxon promising the world, but she has stood by ever since as services deteriorate.”
