“… Rudd has done the right thing, but not because he cares about pensioners...” NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has blasted an RTA decision to cut speed limits on the Bells Line of Road, saying it showed Labor Governments had permanently given up on upgrading the vital link. The new speed restrictions will add up to 20 minutes to a trip between Richmond and LithgowGovernment has announced 8 December lump sum payments of $1400 for single pensioners, $2100 for pensioner couples, and $1000 for carers and children. “The Government until today has ignored the plight of pensioners. This measure is what the Coalition and people like Don Morgan have been pushing for over the past few months,” Senator Nash said. The Senate in September passed the Coalition’s Urgent Relief for Single Aged Pensioners bill – dubbed ‘Don’s Law’- but Labor Members including Richmond MP Justine Elliot and Page MP Janelle Saffin used their numbers to bury the initiative in the House of Representatives. Senator Nash said she had rung Don Morgan today to congratulate him on his contribution to forcing the Government backflip. “The Prime Minister admitted the purpose of the payments was to boost the sagging economy rather than compensate pensioners for rampant price rises – basically Mr Rudd has done the right thing, but not because he cares about aged pensioners”, Senator Nash concluded.
