“…accessing free dental treatment in country areas is like pulling hen’s teeth…” The Nationals in the Senate have defeated a further Rudd Government attempt to abolish Medicare funding for private dental treatment of patients with chronic medical conditions, according to Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate, Fiona Nash. “This is especially important for seniors in country areas where accessing State Government funded public dental treatment in hospitals is like, well, pulling hen's teeth,” Senator Nash declared. An initiative of the former Coalition Government, the Medicare Dental Scheme provides funding of up to $4,250 over two years for private dental treatment, enabling mainly elderly patients to get their teeth fixed. “Labor’s alternative Commonwealth Dental Policy throws money at the States for public dental treatment, but the Nationals and other non-Labor parties understand current State Labor Governments simply aren't meeting their obligations in that regard.” Senator Nash said the Nationals had now blocked a series of extreme Labor tax hikes which would hurt country residents, including an increase in the excise on fuel used to deliver groceries and other goods to regional communities Contact: Murray Lees, Media Adviser 0447 34 00 25
