“…Don Morgan’s law is coming to Parliament next week…” North Coast Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has revealed prominent Tweed seniors advocate Don Morgan was part of the inspiration behind a new Coalition bill which would increase single pensions by $30-a-week – and she is challenging Richmond MP Justine Elliot to support the initiative. “I dropped in on Don and Nancy Morgan at their South Tweed Heads home in July and they detailed to me the plight of pensioners in the face of skyrocketing fuel and food prices,” Senator Nash said. “The Morgans had nothing to benefit because they weren’t asking for an increase in their own couples pension. They specifically said single pensioners were the most in need and should be ‘first cab off the rank’.” “I immediately wrote to the Prime Minister asking for a top up payment, and discussed the issue with my Coalition colleagues, who had heard similar testimony on their travels.” “I am yet to receive a reply from Mr Rudd. What he must now do is instruct his party to support the Coalition bill which would increase the single pension by $30 a week.” “As far as I am concerned this is “Don Morgan’s Law”, it is coming up to Parliament next week, and I can’t think imagine anyone heartless enough to vote against it.” “That is why I am challenging Don and Nancy’s local MP Justine Elliot to put her ministerial career on hold for a minute and vote for Don Morgan’s Law. After all she is not only the Minister for Ageing but has Australia’s highest concentration of seniors in her electorate. “She would gain an enormous credibility boost if just once she put the interests of her constituents ahead of those of her party,” Senator Nash concluded.
