“Only the Nationals can stop these assaults on country motorists …” Coalition Senators have blocked a proposed Labor tax hike which would have hit thousands of motorists across country New South Wales, according to Nationals Senator Fiona Nash. The Rudd Government is attempting to introduce a 30 per cent tax hike on motor vehicles retailing above $57,000, but the $550 million tax hike was overturned by the Nationals and Liberals in the Senate. “If Labor and its allies got away with this,” says Senator Nash, “you would pay thousands of dollars more for the Landcruiser you need for your tourism business in Tweed Heads or your farm business in Cobar.” “Higher petrol prices already disadvantage country motorists compared to those in the Sydney because we have to drive further and we have fewer public transport options.” “Earlier this year Labor attempted to jack up the excise on diesel used by heavy vehicles, which again disproportionately penalises country residents. The Nationals blocked that tax grab too.” “Only the Nationals can stop these assaults on country motorists. The minor parties and independents are already compromising their position in negotiations with Labor,” Senator Nash asserted. “A dirty deal between Labor and the Greens would exempt certain imported cars including BMWs and Audis, but slug Australian made Holdens.” “It goes to show the Greens and Independents just can’t be trusted to stand up to this city centric Labor Government,” Senator Nash concluded.
