Nationals Senator for NSW, Fiona Nash, is calling on AWB Limited’s board of directors to ensure as many drought-affected wheat growers as possible are allowed to vote at the extraordinary general meeting to be held in August. “Recent drought years have prevented many growers from delivering grain to AWB, and not delivering the required tonnage under AWB’s constitution can deny growers their vote,” Senator Nash said. “The AWB board does have the discretion, under section 1.2 of its constitution, to grant A-Class shareholder status to growers who have not met the tonnage requirements because of local “climactic or weather conditions.” “Given the importance to the industry’s future of the forthcoming extraordinary general meeting, I urge the board to apply common sense and make sure everyone who should have their say, does have their say.” “Excluding growers effectively on the basis of drought would just bring further disquiet and division to the industry,” Senator Nash concluded.
