In spite of having been previously axed by the Labor Government, there is renewed hope for the Tweed Skate Park and Kingscliff Community Centre. The projects had been approved by the previous Coalition Federal Government before the November 2007 election campaign. The Nationals Duty Senator for the North Coast, Fiona Nash, said the welcome news for the Tweed community follows months of outright spin from Richmond Labor MP Justine Elliot who claimed the Howard Government had never committed funding to the projects. “The skate park and the community centre now urgently need Mrs Elliot’s backing because Minister Albanese has decreed proponents will need to renegotiate contracts before the end of July and he told the Australian newspaper today that “not all of these projects will meet the requirements to become eligible to receive financial support." “It is only a fortnight since the Rudd Government declared that "uncontracted applications will not be proceeded with," Senator Nash said. “If Mrs Elliot won’t throw her weight behind these great local projects, I certainly will. I stand ready and willing to provide whatever help I can to make them happen.” Senator Nash said the Rudd Government’s begrudging backflip made it very clear that the Coalition’s Regional Partnerships was a good program supporting good projects. She added that funding may have to be topped up to cover the increased costs incurred by communities through Labor’s unnecessary and overtly political six month delay.
