Tweed seniors miss out as Minister Elliot puts career before locals

“Elliot can't continue blaming previous government for neglect of Tweed...” Tweed aged pensioners are the big losers from Labor's first federal budget according to their representative bodies, North Coast Nationals Duty Senator Fiona Nash said today. “Local Labor Party MP and Minsiter for Ageing Justine Elliot has failed to stand up for the one in four Tweed residents over the age of 65,” Senator Nash said. The chief executive of National Seniors Australia, Michael O'Neill, said: "The Government has failed to do anything to support our most vulnerable senior citizens, particularly those on single aged pensions." (SMH, 14/5/08, p4) The NSW branch of the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association was even more scathing, saying: “In Wayne Swan’s tax-cuts-theatre of the absurd, low-income pensioners miss out...Wayne Swan has failed low-income pensioners by putting fighting inflation before fighting poverty.” (cpsu.org.au) Senator Nash also condemned Ms Elliot over what she called 'the cynical exploitation of Tweed youth' over the skate park issue. “The Budget confirms there will be no federal money for the Tweed skate park and it is hard to see how the project can go ahead now despite the support of the NSW Labor Government and Tweed Shire Council.” “Ms Elliot can't continue blaming the previous government for the neglect of Tweed residents at both ends of the age scale. She is a Minister of the Crown and has a responsibility to deliver for locals,” Senator Nash concluded. To interview Senator Fiona Nash, please call 0428 864 845
