Nationals Duty Senator for the North Coast Fiona Nash has accused federal Labor MPs Justine Elliot and Janelle Saffin of betraying their constituents after the pair voted with the Government to increase taxes on freight, which would be passed on to local consumers in the form of increased prices for everyday items. “The Rudd Government has just introduced legislation to jack up truck rego fees and bring back Paul Keating’s hated fuel excise indexation,” Senator Nash said. “When governments increase taxes on freight, people who live furthest from the major industrial centres suffer the most.” “The Labor Members for Richmond and Page both campaigned on Mr Rudd’s coat tails, with promises to curb price increases at the check out.” “Yet both these MPs have just voted for a tax hike on transport, which they know, or should know, will hit family budgets in their electorates.” “North Coast families are already struggling with rising fuel prices and home loan rates, and now they will be hit with the Elliot-Saffin Tax, or E.S.T. at the checkout.” Senator Nash said the after seven years of fuel excise reductions in real terms under the National/Liberal Government, the tax on the diesel used to transport goods to consumers will now rise each year. “North Coast families will be asking why the Rudd Government hitting us with the Elliot Saffin Tax when it promised to keep grocery prices down? “The answer is that L-Plate Labor in Canberra has been conned by corruption-tainted Labor in Sydney, which stands to make an extra $16 million a year in rego increases alone,” Senator Nash said. Senator Nash spoke against the tax hike which was opposed the by the Coalition in both houses of Parliament and defeated in the Senate. To interview Senator Fiona Nash, please call 0428 864 845
