Despite Rudds’ grandstanding that all of Labor’s election commitments will be honoured in full, one of Labor’s show piece election promises is now laying shattered at the feet of the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Conroy, said Nationals Senator Fiona Nash today. During the election Labor promised that within six months of gaining office, work would begin on a $10 billion hook up of 98% of Australians to high-speed computer services. Now instead of getting ready to enjoy broadband access, Australians are being told that work might only just be commencing at the end of the year. Mark Day accurately summed up the Minister’s performance in an article in the Australian on 13/3/2008 as; “bumbling, stumbling, achieving nothing”. It was not only individuals who were looking forward to broadband access in their home that are feeling let down by the breaking of this promise. Schools may also have been left out in the cold by the Minister’s failures, as the fibre to the premises included schools, businesses as well as homes. "What is the effect of this broken promise on the education Minister’s promise to install computers in schools? "What effect will this broken promise have on our future economic growth with Labor claiming the roll out would boost economic activity by $30 billion a year?" Senator Nash said. Senator Conroy has demonstrated he is clearly not up to the task of implementing such a key election promise with all Australians set to suffer as a result. Media contact: Liz Sheridan 0416 746 358
