Recent comments by General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner calling for a major shift towards ethanol blended fuels to reduce oil demands should come as welcome news to Australians hopeful for cheaper, cleaner, greener fuels, Nationals NSW Senator Fiona Nash said. Within the last week Mr Wagoner told audiences in Las Vegas and Detroit ethanol offers tremendous potential to reduce growth in oil consumption and a drop in greenhouse gas emissions in a surprisingly short time frame. “As world oil prices drive up the price of fuel at the bowser it is pleasing to see the chairman of one of the world’s leading car manufacturers call for a major shift to ethanol blended fuels,” Senator Nash said. “Australians deserve a real alternative to expensive oil thirsty fuel products, and it is clear to me ethanol will deliver them cheaper, cleaner, greener fuel. “However, if Australia is to embrace ethanol blended fuels three things need to occur: 1 – introduce real incentives for large-scale homegrown ethanol production; 2 – increased availability of ethanol blended fuels at service stations across Australia; and 3 – introduce E85 blended ethanol fuels to encourage flex-fuel vehicles into the Australian market. “In 2008 General Motors alone will offer 25 flex-fuel models around the world running on E85 ethanol blended fuel. Now is the time for Australian car manufacturers and importers to introduce flex-fuel vehicles to Australia. “Ethanol is the only means of providing real hip pocket relief for Australian motorists against rising fuel prices. “Motorists around the world are realising cheaper prices thanks to ethanol blended fuels. Why aren't we? "The questions all Australian motorists should be asking the Rudd Labor Government is this! Why are we missing out on cheaper, cleaner, greener fuels Mr Rudd? What are you going to do about it?" As well as delivering cheaper fuel prices to motorists – all year, a homegrown ethanol industry would provide alternative markets for Australian farmers that would help to stimulate regional development, leading to job opportunities and significant economic growth, while addressing health concerns, which would benefit all Australians, Senator Nash said.
