Lloyd George has been behind the wheel of countless trucks throughout his 38 year career; clocking up thousands of kilometres along the way. As the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) 2006 National Professional Driver of the Year, Lloyd is now driving a renewed push for improved truck safety on Australia's roads, embarking on a driving tour to spread the word about road and driver safety - a message he is extremely passionate about. Lloyd took the opportunity during a stopover in Young to raise some of these important safety issues with Senator Nash and local government representatives. "Truck safety needs to be approached from a number of angles - obviously the truck driver has a responsibility to ensure they drive safely and appropriately for the particular road conditions, but other road users also have a responsibility when sharing the roads with trucks, to keep in mind the unique challenges faced by those behind the wheel of these heavy vehicles," Senator Nash said. Lloyd also raised the need for improved road infrastructure, particularly in rural and regional areas. "Road quality and maintenance isn't just an issue for our truck drivers; it affects all of us, particularly in rural and regional areas where we rely so heavily on our road infrastructure - whether it be the school bus on its daily run or the truck delivering supplies to rural centres - ensuring our roads are of the highest possible standard is fundamental to our way of life, which is why the Federal Coalition Government has programs such as Roads to Recovery to ensure councils have the extra money to spend on local roads. "I congratulate Lloyd on his achievement in being named the ATA Driver of the Year; his impeccable record, professionalism and vast experience ensures he is the right man for the job when it comes to promoting greater community awareness of the trucking industry."
