Juggling work and family life can be a delicate balancing act, but when you’re also a member of local council involved in a variety of community projects, the balance becomes more complicated.
That is unless you’re Fiona Rossiter.
Mother to six children ranging in age from 18 months to 19 years, Cr Rossiter divides her time between her role as a mother and wife to Paul, her job as a theatre nurse at Orange Base Hospital and her work as a very active member of Orange City Council.
This very busy lifestyle has earned Cr Rossiter the honour of being named Woman of the Year 2006 for the Orange region in recognition of her contribution to the local community.
So how does she fit everything in? According to Cr Rossiter, the key is to plan.
“That is the best advice I can offer – plan ahead,” Cr Rossiter said.
“Yes I do lead quite a demanding lifestyle, but there is a balance and once you find it, the rewards certainly make it all worth while.
“I am passionate about working for the greater good of all families and I think becoming a family should be an experience that is to be enjoyed and treasured.”
Aside from her work on council where she is a member of a number of committees, Cr Rossiter has taken an active role in a variety of community-based projects including the Orange Star Search – a local talent quest set up to raise funds for a local radio station and the local base hospital, the establishment of a Fairy Sparkle Garden at Orange Base – providing a haven for sick children and their families, and has recently become a founding member of the newly established Ronald McDonald House for Orange.
“There is such a great sense of community in Orange and I am very proud to be able to represent the local people and help the community in any way I can.”
In naming Cr Rossiter as an ‘Australians In Profile’, Senator Nash said the councillor is a leading example for other working mums.
“As a working mother myself, I know how important it is to find a balance,” Senator Nash said.
“Cr Rossiter is a perfect example of what’s possible when you get the balance right. She is an outstanding representative for rural and regional Australia, and being named Woman of the Year for the area is certainly testimony to that.”
