A group of six young locals have today been recognised for their strong work ethic and their contribution to the local environment during a graduation ceremony marking the completion of the latest Green Corps project in the region. The group of locals aged 17 to 20 were part of the Burringbar Creek Platypus Habitat Protection and Biodiversity Enhancement project. On hand to personally congratulate the team members, Nationals Senator Fiona Nash said the effort of the team was a good example to other young Australians. “Participants in the project not only achieved excellent environmental outcomes, they also undertook a community venture, which involved activities that have increased community awareness and appreciation for the natural environment,” Senator Nash said. The team’s work included improving the ecological health of Burringbar Creek by removing weeds and planting native vegetation and protecting existing platypus habitat areas along the creek. Since the introduction of the Australian Government’s Green Corps programme, volunteers Australia wide have propagated and planted more than14 million trees, erected more than 8000 kilometres of fencing, removed more than 50 000 hectares of weeds, collected more than 9500 kilograms of seeds and built or maintained more than 5000 kilometres of walking tracks or boardwalks. Green Corps fosters two of Australia’s most valuable resources—the environment and young people. “This team’s work in Burringbar has made a significant contribution to both the local environment and Australia’s heritage and is an inspiration to all young Australians,” Senator Nash said. “The participants have shown they have a strong work ethic which will stand them in very good stead when they seek employment in the workforce.” Media contact: Julie Siegert 0429 818 600
