Nationals MPs Fiona Nash and Katrina Hodgkinson battled it out for the title of checkers champion at Greenethorpe Public School yesterday during celebrations to mark the official opening of federally funded upgrades at the school. Receiving plenty of tips and hints from students on the sideline, the local MPs maneuvered and strategised their way around the over-sized checkers board which is one of a number of additions to the school playground made possible thanks to a government grant of $104,292. Funded under the Federal Coalition’s Investing in Our Schools Programme (IOSP), the school used the grant to fund various improvements to the grounds which also included the installation of turf, the installation of a watering system and the construction of a shade sail providing much needed protection from the summer sun. Narrowly missing out on the title of Greenethorpe checkers champ, Senator Nash said she was very keen for a re-match. “Katrina proved a very worthy opponent and I must concede the best player won on the day, but I am very keen to redeem myself and have challenged my state colleague to an annual checkers challenge here in Greenethorpe, so I’ll be getting some practice in between now and next year so I can even-up the score at the next showdown,” Senator Nash said. “I have visited many schools around the state of all different sizes and I must say that Greenethorpe is one of the most impressive small schools I’ve seen yet. It is a real pleasure to be able to come and spend time with the entire school community – from the students and staff to parents and friends – and see the wonderful results of the Coalition’s funding programmes.” Media contact: Julie Siegert 0429 818 600
