NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash was in Chillingham today to officially launch the $143,000 Federal Coalition Government funded ‘Chillingham/Rous River preservation and nature walk’ Green Corps project. Ten young local volunteers have started work on the project which involves a variety of activities designed to enhance the environment of the local region. “This area is certainly a beautiful part of the world, and it’s wonderful to see projects like this that help preserve and enhance its natural beauty for future generations,” Senator Nash said. “Aside from the obvious environmental benefits for the area, the project will provide team members with the chance to gain valuable training and experience which they can then take with them into full-time employment. “I wish the entire team the best of luck over the next few weeks and look forward to returning in a few months to see the finished result.” These young people are among hundreds around the country volunteering to join the Coalition’s Green Corps programme. The Chillingham/Rous River habitat preservation and ‘Gondwana’ themed nature walk project will involve planting native species, constructing nest boxes, constructing small footbridges for the walk and designing, developing and producing an educational brochure in a plan to restore and rehabilitate the local riparian habitat. The project is being completed in association with the Chillingham Community Association. Green Corps is a Federal Government initiative offering young people aged 17-20 the opportunity to receive quality training while participating in projects that conserve, preserve and restore Australia’s natural environment and cultural heritage.
