Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has today welcomed news that Telstra will switch on ADSL broadband for the first time in a number of local exchanges, giving communities in outlying areas the opportunity to access faster internet speeds. Senator Nash said thanks to subsidies provided by the Liberal-National Government under the Australian Broadband Guarantee programme, Telstra has made the decision to enable ADSL broadband in 211 exchanges across the country, including Koorawatha, Wallendbeen, Quandialla and Gooloogong. “Telstra is one of a number of applicants that have been approved to supply broadband under the Federal Government’s Australian Broadband Guarantee or ABG which gives subsidies of up to $1,100 per customer to approved providers,” Senator Nash said. “The announcement that Telstra has signed a funding deed under the ABG to switch on ADSL broadband in more than 200 exchanges is wonderful news for smaller communities who may have struggled with slow internet speeds in the past. “Everyone from farmers to students at the local small schools will now be able to gain access to ADSL broadband which opens up a range of information sharing and educational opportunities, which is great news for local communities. “The Federal Liberal-National Government has a long-term strategic plan to ensure all Australians, regardless of where they live, have access to fast and affordable broadband and the Australian Broadband Guarantee is a fundamental component of the Government’s focused approach on ensuring rural and regional communities are not left behind when it comes to telecommunications.” Since 2004, more than 1.5 million people have gained access to affordable broadband for the first time as a result of per customer subsidies from the Federal Government.
