Despite countless assurances of support for the single desk, Kevin Rudd and his city-centric Labor party have today declared they intend to dismantle the wheat marketing system which Senator Fiona Nash says, is the latest example of how out of touch Labor is with the needs of rural and regional communities. “The ALP’s export wheat policy is a major back-flip on behalf of the Rudd Labor Party on the single desk,” Senator Nash said. “Just five months ago, Kevin Rudd declared his support for the single desk, promising wheat growers that his party backed the system which was set up to help our wheat growers compete in a distorted international market. “But now we have Labor pledging to abandon the system that the majority of growers told us they want to remain in place. So not only has Rudd shown he can’t be trusted to keep his word, he’s shown just how arrogant he is by completely ignoring the wishes of rural Australia on this issue.” Senator Nash said following exhaustive consultation with Australian wheat growers and industry who told the Government in overwhelming numbers the single desk should remain, the Federal Liberal-National Government had devised a way forward, giving growers until March next year to establish a new grower owned and controlled single desk entity to manage wheat exports. “The Wheat Export Marketing Alliance has been established and are currently working to form a company to manage the single desk into the future – something the Labor party claimed to support until today. “Rural and regional Australia beware; big city-Labor simply can’t be trusted to represent the interests of the seven million people living outside the metropolitan areas.” Media contact: Julie Siegert 0429 818 600
