$620,000 will be distributed among 29 projects in the Richmond electorate which are aimed at helping conserve the local environment, Senator Fiona Nash said. Senator Nash said the funding has been made available through Round 9 of the Federal Liberal-National Government’s Envirofund. “The Federal Coalition is committed to supporting our local communities in conserving and enhancing our natural resources,” Senator Nash said. “The funding made available through the Government’s Envirofund will ensure our communities have the help they need to tackle the important environmental issues they are facing at a local level.” A total of $619,920.23 has been awarded to a variety of projects in the area ranging from establishing corridors of native vegetation to erecting fencing to preserve native trees and shrubs. Other projects include restoring rainforest areas, protecting stream banks and reducing erosion and reducing contamination of waterways. Since its inception in 2002, the Federal Coalition has provided communities around the country with more than $130 million to undertake almost 8,000 Envirofund projects. Envirofund is the local component of the Federal Coalition’s $5.1 billion Natural Heritage Trust. Individuals and groups can apply for grants of up to $50,000 for local projects such as planting native plants, fencing to protect native bush land, skill and knowledge building activities and trials of new techniques for sustainable farming, forestry or fishing. Applicants are required to make a contribution to the project in the form of cash or in-kind services such as labour. Applications for funding of local environment projects through the next round of the Envirofund will open early in 2008.
