A number of key industries, including a locally-based business, will benefit from a new programme introduced by the Liberal-National Government aimed at addressing skills shortages in regional areas, Senator Fiona Nash said today. More than $4 million has been allocated to the Targeting Skills Needs in Regions programme, which Senator Nash said, is designed to address the skills needs across 13 sectors. “On a local level, $52,800 will be provided to Northern Rivers Screenworks Inc for a project that will provide training for local screen content providers in new media and virtual world development and facilitate new small business opportunities and employment in the Northern Rivers region,” Senator Nash said. “A range of Government-funded projects, including the local ‘Real Life Careers in the Virtual World’ project will commence in the coming months and will provide a strategic and innovative response to skills needs and the need for quality training and workforce planning. “In fact, the local Nationals candidate for Richmond, Dr Sue Page, has recently raised with me this very issue regarding local skills-based training, to ensure we retain and maintain our population mass and in doing so, ensure our regional industries continue to expand and diversify.” The Targeting Skills Needs in Regions programme was developed in response to a Council of Australian Governments meeting in February 2006 to help increase the supply of skilled labour to address regional needs. The Federal Coalition continues its commitment to delivering a range of initiatives between 2006 and 2009 as part of its $11.3 billion investment in Australia’s future.
