A total of $4,500 in funding has been granted to local projects honouring the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel, Senator Fiona Nash said today. Senator Nash said the funding has been made available under the latest round of grants allocated as part of the Federal Coalition Government’s Saluting Their Service programme. $3,000 has been approved for the Kingscliff RSL sub-branch to hold a ‘Remembrance Day Exhibition’ from 9-12 November 2007 at the Kingscliff RSL Hall to promote public awareness of the contribution veterans have made to Australia’s military history. A further $1,500 has also been approved for Cudgen Primary School to install two plaques at the Kingscliff commemorative walkway. The plaques have been created by students in memory of the Indonesian Confrontation and the Battle of Buna. “These are two wonderful projects and are the perfect example of the community-based initiatives the Saluting Their Service programme was set up to assist,” Senator Nash said. The Federal Coalition Government’s Saluting Their Service programme encourages community participation in commemorative activities honouring the service and sacrifice of those who have served Australia in wars, conflicts and peace operations. Projects supported across the country include the restoration of community war memorials, displays of wartime memorabilia and commemoration of significant wartime anniversaries.
