$2.2 MILLION FOR BYRON SHIRE COUNCIL

Byron Shire Council will receive more than $2.2 million in Federal Coalition Government funding as part of the latest round of Financial Assistance Grants, Nationals Senator Fiona Nash announced today. Senator Nash said the Federal Coalition had allocated $2,269,565 to Byron Shire in 2007-08 to be spent on local roads and other local government services. Local Government Financial Assistance Grants – Byron Shire, 2007/08 General purpose: $1,404,408 Roads: $865,157 Total: $2,269,565 The Nationals’ candidate for Richmond, Dr Sue Page welcomed the news of the funding. “Local councils provide communities with countless services that residents come to rely on during their day to day lives,” Dr Page said. “These grants allow councils around the country to continue providing a range of health, community, recreational, cultural and environmental services to the local community and provide funding to enable councils to maintain local roads. “The grants are untied which means the local council in Byron can allocate the funding according to local priorities as they see fit which is fantastic.” Senator Nash said the Federal Coalition Government has increased financial assistance grant funding to local government by $76.7 million from 2006 – 07 and it is no $599 million higher than when the Government came to office in 1996. Grants to individual councils were recommended by the New South Wales Local Government Grants Commission. In addition to these grants, NSW councils are entitled to receive $85 million this year from the Federal Coalition for local roads under the Auslink Roads to Recovery programme.
