The Labor Candidate for Calare Michael Allen has been caught out in an embarrassing blunder, which Senator Fiona Nash said has highlighted what people west of the mountains have known all along; Labor doesn’t have a clue about inland New South Wales.
On Mr Allen’s ALP website (http://www.alp.org.au/people/nsw/allen_michael.php) under the heading ‘Electorate Profile’ in the section entitled ‘Area and Location Description’ the cities of Bathurst and Lithgow – which are part of the new seat of Macquarie – are listed as being part of Calare:
‘Area and Location Description: Calare covers an area of approximately 21 621 sq km from the Blue Mountains in the east to Eugowra in the west, Bathurst Regional Council in the north to Blayney, Cowra and Oberon Shires in the South. The main towns include Bathurst, Blayney, Canowindra, Cowra, Eugowra, Lithgow, Molong, Oberon, Orange, Portland, Wallerawang and Yeoval.’
“According to Mr Allen the electorate only extends as far west as Eugowra – Parkes, Forbes, Nyngan, Bourke, Brewarrina, Cobar and Narromine, just to name a few, don’t even rate a mention,” Senator Nash said.
“This embarrassing blunder goes to show why country people, quite rightly, have no faith in the Labor party.
“For a major political party to make such a faux paux is astounding. After all, this is the area Mr Allen wants local communities to think he has an intimate knowledge of and is capable of representing.
“How can he possibly claim to represent the interests of local communities when it appears he doesn’t quite understand which communities they are?
“This embarrassing blunder highlights the candidate’s lack of attention to detail and I would suggest that he checks all of the material he is supplied by his party’s city-based head office very carefully in future.”
