$326,000 TO DELIVER LOCAL YOUTH PROJECTS

Two local projects will share in $326,525 in funding under the Federal Coalition Government’s Local Answers initiative, NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash said. The successful recipients in Richmond under Round 5 of the Local Answers programme: The Family Centre Inc: REALskills (Tweed Heads) REALskills will involve whole school communities, service agencies and parents in supporting young people in their transition to adulthood. Relationship and life skills sessions will be delivered through student and parent programmes, with workshops and follow-up sessions for teachers and service providers. $246,525 Byron Youth Services Incorporated: Byron Youth Enterprise Centre (Byron Bay) Byron Youth Enterprise Centre will encourage a culture of enterprise among young people by providing experience in establishing and operating small business ventures. Small saleable items such as T-shirts and cookbooks will be produced and sold at markets and on-line. Education programmes and practical resources will be supplied and students will be linked to community mentors and local businesses. $80,000 Senator Nash said the funding commitment for the two projects – both of which have previously received Government support – would help strengthen local communities through the development of skills-based training for younger members of the region. “The Federal Coalition Government’s Local Answers programme is aimed at funding projects which support children and families in the community through the development of parenting and relationships skills,” Senator Nash said. “The Federal Government recognises that at a local level, community organisations are in the best position to devise local solutions to local problems and the Local Answers programme helps bring these solutions about. I congratulate the organisers who have been successful in securing funding.” Over 480 projects worth $70 million have been funded nationally under previous rounds of the Local Answers initiative.
