NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash today joined Australian Hearing Tweed Heads to celebrate the organisation’s 60th year as Australia’s leading hearing services provider. Senator Nash said there are about 350,000 Australians who wear hearing aids, but there are 1.3 million more who could benefit from hearing aid technology. “Many people don’t take advantage of the technology that is available and go without hearing aids,” Senator Nash said. “A lot of older people don’t realise they have a hearing problem, because the hearing loss is so gradual.” Senator Nash said Australian Hearing has established itself as one of the largest hearing services in the world and is regarded as providing first class hearing rehabilitation, acoustic research, technology development and education. “The agency was established by the Federal Government in 1947 to service children affected by the Rubella epidemic and ex-servicemen returning from World War II,” Senator Nash said. “The organisation started in Sydney with four employees and has grown since then, employing 900 professionals to provide services at more than 88 permanent sites and 200 visiting sites throughout the country. “Federal Government assistance provided through Australian Hearing now ensures that Australians with hearing difficulties have access to small, digital devices which are comfortable and discreet. Over the last 60 years, Australia Hearing has fitted over one million hearing aids,” Senator Nash said. Senator Nash also encouraged locals to receive a free hearing screening and talk to Australian Hearing staff about the hearing solutions available to them.
