NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has today welcomed the announcement by the Federal Coalition Government of an additional $4 million in funding for local projects to protect and enhance Australia’s coastal and marine environment. Senator Nash said the funding is to be provided through a special round of the Government’s Envirofund with both community groups and individuals now able to apply for grants of up to $50,000 for a wide range of on-the-ground projects to protect the coastal and marine environment in Richmond. “This special round of the Envirofund programme is focused on protecting coastal and marine environments under threat from a range of factors such as pollution and the expansion of urban development,” Senator Nash said. Senator Nash said examples of projects funded through Envirofund include activities such as fencing off seabird nesting sites, protecting coasts and waterways, planting native vegetation and raising awareness of local issues in the coastal and marine environment. “To make it easier for coastal communities to get these sorts of environment projects off the ground, the Federal Coalition Government will again consider a reduced level of applicant contribution for coastal Envirofund projects, particularly where they are undertaken by volunteers.” The Federal Coalition Government’s Envirofund is the local action component of the $3 billion Natural Heritage Trust and, since its launch in 2002, has approved almost 7,000 local projects and provided more than $110 million in funding through Envirofund. The coastal and marine round of Envirofund opened for applications on Monday 21 May and will close on Friday 20 July. More information and examples of eligible activities are in the Envirofund Round 10 Guide and Application Form.
