RICHMOND RECEIVES $70,000 IN COMMUNITY WATER GRANTS FUNDING

NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash today welcomed the announcement that two groups in Richmond will together receive $70,000 for projects to save and recycle local water resources. The projects are being funding under the $200 million Community Water Grants programme, which Senator Nash said is part of the $2 billion Australian Government Water Fund. Projects to receive funding in Richmond: Bangalow Public School: This project will save water at Bangalow Public School by installing water tanks. The harvested rainwater will be used for toilet flushing. The existing toilet facilities will be upgraded with slow flow devices, dual flush toilets and waterless urinals. The project will save 135,000 litres of water per year. Total funding: $24,293. Tweed Shire Council: This project will recycle treated blackwater for outdoor use at Uki community catchment nursery. It is expected to reduce the use of mains water by approximately 1,095,000 litres per year. Total funding: $45,454. “Water is certainly one of our most precious resources and I congratulate both Tweed Shire Council and Bangalow Public School for their efforts in helping ensure a sustainable and water-wise future,” Senator Nash said. “These projects are two of 167 community groups to receive a share in a further $5 million provided by the Federal Coalition Government under Round 2 of the Community Water Grants programme which helps fund projects that promote wise water use and increase community awareness about water efficiency and conservation. “There are many practical and inexpensive ways we can all help conserve water and I encourage local community groups to take part in the next round of Community Water Grants.” Community Water Grants has helped communities around Australia save more than 27,000 megalitres of water – approximately the amount of water 100,000 average households would use annually. Round 3 of the Federal Coalition Government’s Community Water Grants is now open. Applications close on 4 July 2007.
