JOBLESS RATE MATCHES 32 YEAR LOW

32,000 people took up full time work last month which NSW Nationals Senator Fiona Nash said is one of the clearest indications yet that the Federal Coalition Government’s WorkChoices legislation is working. Labor Force figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics demonstrate seasonally adjusted employment increased by 10,500 over the month to a record high of 10,370,100 while full time employment increased in March by 31,700 to a record high of 7,442,800. “The strong jobs growth in March has seen the official jobless rate fall to an equal 30 year low of 4.5 per cent. Over the last 12 months, 276,000 new jobs have been created, 96 per cent of which are full time,” Senator Nash said. “Today’s announcement that the jobless rate has once again fallen to a low of 4.5 per cent is testimony to both the effectiveness of the Federal Coalition’s WorkChoices legislation and the strong economic management of this Government over the past ten years. “Workplace reform and in particular the removal of the unfair dismissal laws has given businesses the freedom to expand their workforce and grow their business. “Traveling around the state I hear stories from small business owners, who prior to WorkChoices, were too scared to hire workers because of the worry they would be liable for unfair dismissal if they chose to restructure their business in response to market conditions. “But now, people are comfortable hiring staff, safe in the knowledge they won’t be disadvantaged if they are forced to make operational changes.” Senator Nash said today’s figures follow the release last month of the Small Area Labor Markets data for the December quarter showing more than 63 per cent of the 1350 Statistical Local Areas have recorded a reduction in their unemployment rate over the past year. “These figures demonstrate employment in rural and regional Australia is growing thanks to the Federal Coalition Government’s strong economic management.” More than two million jobs have been created since the Federal Coalition Government came to office eleven years ago. Of those jobs, 1.1 million have been full-time positions. Media contact: Julie Siegert 0429 818 600.
